What is Starling Minds? How was it developed?
Starling Minds is an online program designed to help you improve your mental health. The concepts are based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a form of evidence-based treatment that helps people understand how their thoughts, behaviours, and physiology affect how they feel.
Starling Minds’ mission is to make mental health care accessible to everyone by removing stigma, geographic limitations, and high costs.
What is Mental Fitness?
Mental fitness is a concept that has only emerged in the past few years. Just as we can improve our physical health by exercising, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep, we can proactively improve our mental health and our abilities to manage stress and anxiety by strengthening our minds.
Learning techniques that improve your mental fitness can be broken down into three skills:
- Recognizing the patterns that create difficult emotions and negative moods.
- Integrating techniques to regulate overwhelming emotions and thoughts when and as they arise.
- Resolving the patterns that detract from your well-being by building new ones.
Part of strengthening your mental fitness is discovering strategies that are most effective for you.
What will I learn from Starling?
Our program will help you explore concepts and build skills to manage stressors and overcome anxiety and depression. You have access to:
- Video-based CBT sessions make it easy to learn leading strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Tools that help you set goals, track progress, balance thoughts, and regulate moods
- A confidential online community that provides support, encouragement and an understanding that each member is not alone on this journey
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a scientifically-based treatment that helps people learn how their thoughts, behaviours and physiology affect how they feel. It views mental health management as a skill that can be learned and improved. Like learning to read or ride a bike, CBT teaches basic concepts about mental health and views training exercises as a key component to mastering skills such as breaking negative behaviour patterns, regulating emotional reactions and balancing thoughts.
How can CBT help people?
CBT is an “evidence-based” form of treatment for many mental health issues, including stress, anxiety and depression. Thousands of research studies have demonstrated its effectiveness and have been published in peer-reviewed medical, psychological and academic journals. Many organizations (i.e. National Institute of Mental Health, Canadian/ American/Australian Psychological/Psychiatric Associations) view CBT as the “gold standard” for psychological treatment.
Evidence has shown that online CBT can be just as effective as CBT done in person.
How do I use Starling Minds?
Our programs are broken down into sessions. Each session includes tools and videos that walk members through their Mental Fitness journey. We recommend that members complete the first 5 sessions within a week. After that, we recommend one session a day. This gives members a chance to absorb and reflect on the information.
